Admission requirements
PhD students or holders of a Norwegian master´s degree of five years or 3+ 2 years (or equivalent) may be admitted. Valid documentation is a statement from your institution that you are a registered PhD student, or a Master´s Diploma with Diploma Supplement / English translation of the diploma. PhD students are exempt from semester fee.
This course is aimed at PhD students and researchers from all scientific disciplines, but is open for others. Master/bachelor students are welcome to apply but they will not be able to get credits. If you aim to include the credits from the course in your 30 mandatory PhD ECTS you should discuss it with both your supervisor and your faculty.
Maximum 30 participants.
If more than 30 applicants, priority will be given as follows:
1. Participants admitted to the PhD programme at UiT
2. Participants in the Associate Professor programme (Førstelektorprogrammet)
3. PhD candidates from other universities
4. People with a minimum of a Master´s degree (or equivalent), who have not been admitted to a PhD programme
The course will be cancelled if less than 20 participants.
Objective of the course
Knowledge:
- communicate research both in written and oral formats
- know the structure of a scientific article and the writing process
- know the peer-reviewers criteria in evaluating manuscripts
- basic presentation techniques
Skills:
- prepare and present research results both in written and oral formats in an engaging and understandable way
- learn to give constructive feed-back to your peers on their writing and presentations
- refine your scientific English skills
- peer-review articles
General competence:
- evaluate and edit own and others scientific text
- prepare and present a scientific presentation at scientific conferences
- understand the relationship between knowledge and communicating knowledge
Language of instruction
Teaching methods
The teaching on the course will be a combination of theory and practical exercises in text editing, peer-reviewing and presentation techniques. Groups of four students with similar scientific background will be led by an experienced scientist. Through regular meetings, each students manuscript will be evaluated and given constructive critique by all members of the group. The aim is to significantly improve your own manuscripts.
Deadline for pre-work manuscript delivery: 12 October 2016
Lectures in week 43 from 24-28 October 2016
Deadline for delivery of revised manuscript (group work): 18 November 2016
Deadline for delivery of peer-review (exam): 30 November 2016
Group-work weeks 43-47 on a schedule decided by the groups themselves (about 40 hours)
Assessment
Work requirements:
In order to take the exam, all students must participate in the group work.
Re sit exam:
There will not be arranged a re-sit exam.
