Høst 2016
KJE-3301 Organic Chemistry 2 - 20 stp
The course is administrated by
Institutt for kjemi
Type of course
Theoretical and practical subject. The course is available as a singular or elective course independent of study program, also to exchange students. The course is offered on condition that a minimum number of students register for the course(minimum every second year).
Course overlap
K-230 Organic chemistry II 15 stp
Course contents
The course is a continuation of KJE-1002 Organic Chemistry and you will do your first steps into the exciting and challenging field of organic synthesis. Several topics known from KJE-1002 like enol chemistry will be treated in more detail. Additionally, a series of new and important types of reactions and their mechanisms will be introduced, e.g. radical reactions, reactions of carbenes, pericyclic reactions and peptide couplings. Important features in the planning of organic syntheses like chemo-, regio- and stereoselectivity and control by protection/deprotection strategies are discussed. In the lab, you will become familiar with general laboratory practice including safety, performance of a range of organic reactions and different separation techniques.
Admission requirements
Students must have knowledge in theoretical and practical organic chemistry equivalent to Kje-1002 and Kje-1003.
Objective of the course
After passing the exam, you as a student will:
Knowledge:
- know a set of important organic transformations
- recognize a standard set of reagents and understand their mode of action
- understand central aspects in the control of organic reactions
- understand the underlying principles for a set of separation techniques
Skills:
- be able to draw the mechanism of important organic reactions
- be able to choose appropriate reagents for the selective transformation of a set of functional groups
- be able to determine the outcome of a reaction and identify possible side reactions
- be able to foresee some experimental requirements for organic transformations based on the mechanism and the reactivity of the reagents
- know were to find information about chemical hazards and how to treat chemicals
- be able to perform organic reactions under different conditions
- be able to isolate and purify organic compounds
General competence:
- recognize reagents and transformations described in the scientific literature
- have gained understanding of how to work and behave in an organic chemistry laboratory
Language of instruction
The language of instruction is English and all of the syllabus material is in English. Examination questions will be given in English, and may be answered in either English or a Norwegian/Scandinavian language.
Teaching methods
Seminars/exercises: 65 h Laboratory: introduction to laboratory techniques and two literature syntheses; (the laboratory will be open for three weeks)
Assessment
Grades based on performance in the laboratory (20%)and a final written examination 5h(80%). Lettergrades (A-F).
Coursework requirements: Admission to the examination requires that the student has passed the laboratory course, counts 20% of final grade
Date for examination
One written 07.12.2016
