BIO-8509 Advanced Marine Botany II - 10 stp

Course contents
The main topics for the written project are: Geophysical growth regime of northern phytoplankton (hydrophysics, elements and irradiance) Communities and dynamics (species composition, taxonomy, ice flora, bloom dynamics) Selected themes, e.g. "biological pump", "usefulness of field research".

Objective of the course
The course deals with important basic (classical) and advanced aspects of high latitude phytoplankton, i.e. the species of northern microalgae communities and characteristics of the environment they thrive in. Included is a survey of the hydrophysical and phytoplankton literature of the Norwegian Coast northwards from the Arctic Circle. Builds on BIO-8508.

Evaluation of written project and laboratory/cruisereport. Oral exam. Evaluation: Pass/not pass.
