Course contents

The AMGG trainee school attempts to give more thrust to marine geological/geophysical research, to enhance international cooperation, integration, and visibility of Norway's contribution to research in the Arctic. The research of AMGG focuses on the development of Arctic continental margins including genesis of glacigenic sediments; geo-hazards, paleoclimate & paleoceanography, energy and environment; tectonics and structural geology. The main study area is the fjords and continental margin off Svalbard, northern Norway, the Barents Sea, the Arctic Ocean and east Greenland margin. AMGG aim to arrange at least one new workshop every year on a relevant research topic, to keep students up-to-date on Arctic marine geological/geophysical research.

Admission requirements

To take PhD courses you need to have at least a master's degree or equivalent.

PhD students at UiT The Arctic University of Norway register for the course through StudentWeb . Registrations for the spring semester starts December 1st, unless an earlier date is specified in the application deadline.

External applicants apply for admission through SøknadsWeb. Registrations for the spring semester starts October 1st.

All external applicants have to attach a confirmation of their status as a PhD student from their home institution.
Students who hold a Master of Science degree, but are not yet enrolled as a PhD-student have to attach a copy of their master's degree diploma. These students are also required to pay the semester fee.

Please note: the workshop is often in correlation with the cruise GEO-8144, sometimes participation in the cruise is a requirement.

Objective of the course

The course will give an overview of relevant topics in Arctic marine geology and geophysics.

Language of instruction

English.

Teaching methods

15-25 lectures will be given in each workshop by AMGG scientists and invited specialists, in addition to discussions and seminars. A workshop lasts for about 5 days.

Assessment

A written report from the workshop (about 10 pages long) and a home assignment on a given subject (about 10 pages long).

Grading scale: Pass/fail.

Participation in one workshop is required to gain credits from this course.
