PSY-3022 Communicate research through film - The psychology behind research communication - 10 stp

Type of course
The course can be taken independently of study program as long as the requirement is fulfilled.
Course contents
Part 1a: Introduction. 1 hour
Introduction to the course and presentation of the literature. 1 hour.
Part 1b: Communicaion theory 1.day
The principles behind good communication:
- What has news value?
- Media in todays society
- Who is your target group?
- How to communicate?
- Point, argument and sources
- Structure and dramaturgy
- Dividing into groups and pitch of ideas.
- How to work creatively. Group processes
- Practical group exercises (improv)
- Prepare the interview
- Prepare storyboard
Part 2: Crash course in film, photo and sound 1.day:
- See the world through a lens
- Tell a visual story
- Composing images and film
- Use of light and sound
- Camera and camera technic
- Go trough the storyboard from all groups.
- Go trough the questions for interview.
- Practice interview with each other to improve questions.
- Editing
- Evaluating the result in plenum
- How to improve and prepare for the real deal.
Part 3: Workshop 3 days with Visualdays og Elina Haltunnen:
- Make a visual story of a field or topic within psychology
- Interview a researcher or other source
- Edit and finalising the film.

Admission requirements
BA or cand.mag.-degree. The BA or cand.mag must have a specialisation of at least 80 ects in its respective field, with minimum average grade is C or better on the BA. Recommended perquisite knowledge is the BA course PSY- 2026: The psychology behind research communication. However, students that have not followed this course can still apply. In addition we ask the students to read the given literature (proximately 500 pages) Søknadskode: 9371
Objective of the course
After finishing the course the student will have:
Knowledge and understanding of:
- Research and the role of science in a modern society.
- Media and medias role in society, with emphasis on research and research communication.
- What has news value
- Basic pedagogical principals in communication both oral and written.
- Basic psychological principals in communication like, but not limited to perception, attention, social psychology, learning psychology and theory of emotions.
Skills to:
- Understand research in different fields of psychology and communicating the essence of this.
- Make a self standing communication product like film, slideshow or visual story with clearly defined message and structure.
- Be able to use relevant equipment like camera and editing software
Competence to:
- Analyse different form for research communication in light of basic theories of psychology.
- Popularise science.
- Separate between point and argument and source.
- Plan different ways of communicating science with a clear message and structure.

Teaching methods
The course is divided into three modules (1-3) as specified below. There will be given proximately 45 hours of lectures, individual training and group work. In addition the students will produce a film or slideshow with audio. Most of this work will be done in groups. The students will also learn how to evaluate them selves and others.
Assessment
The students will collect the products from their individual and group work. After the course the students will give a written evaluation of their work.
In the evaluation the students will be asked to argue why they choose to solve the task as they did. They will also be asked to link this evaluation to the basic psychological theories mentioned in the course.
The students will be asked to evaluate if their products have news value. And finally, the students will be asked to suggest ways of improving their products.
The exam may be written in Norwegian or English and will be graded passed/not passed.
If the students dont pass the exam, they will be given an opportunity to resubmit a revised version of their exam one time.
