MAT-3900 Master's Thesis in Mathematics - 60 ECTS

Application deadline

Applicants from countries within EU/EEA: June 1st for the autumn semester and December 1st for the spring semester. Exchange students and Fulbright students: 1 October for the spring semester and 15 April for the autumn semester.

Type of course

Master's thesis for students enrolled in the Master's degree program in Mathematical Sciences, focusing on Mathematics. This course is also available for inbound exchange students upon approval by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics.

Admission requirements

Bachelor of science degree in Mathematics or equal, plus admission to a Master program in Mathematics.

Objectives of the course

Knowledge - The candidate:

  • has a solid basis in mathematical sciences
  • has advanced knowledge of theory and methods in the special theme treated
  • can apply knowledge on new areas of research
  • good knowledge of scientific method

Skills - The candidate:

  • is able to use necessary programming tools and advanced software for solving mathematical problems numerically
  • is able to work independently with problem solving following scientific method
  • can evaluate and analyse published theories and methods in mathematical literature

  General competences - The candidate:

  • displays good communication skills, oral and written, in the presentation of scientific work for both the general public and for the specialists in the field
  • displays good working habits and follows the code of ethics in scientific work
  • is able to continue a career within research, teaching, production, development and technical professions in the society
  • can produce a well-structured presentation of an extensive independent scientific work
  • can carry out an independent, limited research or development project under supervision in mathematics or related areas
  • can contribute to new thinking and innovation processes in the field of mathematics

Language of instruction and examination

The Master's thesis is written either in English or a Scandinavian language.

Re-sit examination

Should the Master's thesis be given the grade F (not passed), it can be handed in again after revision. The deadline for handing in the revised thesis is 3 months from the day the grade is announced to the candidate.
