SIK-2004 Quality, Health, Safety and Environment (QHSE) management - 10 ECTS

Applicants from Nordic countries: 1 June for the autumn semester and 1 December for the spring semester. Exchange students and Fulbright students: 1 October for the spring semester and 15 April for the autumn semester.

The course is technical and can be taken as a singular course.

Course content

The course will introduce the main environmental problems from normal industrial activities, including air pollution, water pollution, solid waste production etc. the environmental risk monitoring methods for pollutants, noise, dust etc, and the environmental risk assessment methods. In addition, the course will also cover the models used to model the transport of contaminants in the environment and the application of Geographic Information System (GIS) in environmental risk monitoring and impact assessment.  

The course also focus on HMS regulation regarding soil, air and sea, the role and responsibilities of supervisory authorities and responsible distribution and participation in the activities and HMS-management system that helps to ensure quality, health, safety and environment.  

In addition to HMS problem from normal industrial activities, the course all also introduce industrial accidents, including fire, explosion, release of toxic substances etc. and risk analysis of those industrial accidents.  

At last, the course will introduce health and safety at workplace and how to build up an internal control system/quality assurance system, especially emphasizing the working environment law and regulations relating to systematic health, environment and safety in enterprises.

Objectives of the course

Knowledge 

On completion of the course, the student has broad knowledge and understanding of: 

  • The framework for HSE regulations in general, including legislation, responsibilities of enterprises and supervisory authorities 
  • Major environmental problems from normal industry activities, including air pollution, water pollution and land pollution 
  • Environmental risk and its monitoring methods 
  • Industrial hazards 
  • GIS technology and its application in health, safety and environmental management 
  • Health and safety at workplace 

Skills 

On completion of the course, the student is able to: 

  • Plan and implement HSE-analysis according to the internal control regulations 
  • Perform an environmental risk assessment 
  • Perform risk analysis from industrial accidents 
  • Analyze the health and safety at workplace 
  • Manage risk from industrial hazards, put forward a management plan to prevent accidents and reduce risk from industrial hazards 
  • Apply GIS technology in health, safety and environmental management 

General competence 

On completion of the course, the student is able to: 

  • Analyze risk from normal industrial activities and accidents. 
  • Apply HSE laws and regulations in businesses. 
  • Plan and carry out varied work tasks and projects in the context of risk and quality management.  
  • Apply GIS technology to solve quality, health, safety and environmental problems.

Teaching methods

36 hours lectures and 12 hours exercises. 

Assessment

The assessment is 4 hours written exam counting for 100 %. Grading scale A - E, F - fail.  

Students having failed the last ordinary examination will be offered a re-sit examination early in the following semester. Students with valid grounds for absence will be offered a postponed exam early in the following semester. 

Required coursework: 5 compulsory exercises, of which at least 4 exercises must be submitted and approved to get access to the written exam.
