spring 2021
KJE-3303 Nuclear Magnetic Resonance - 10 ECTS

Application deadline

Applicants from Nordic countries: 1 June for the autumn semester and 1 December for the spring semester. Exchange students and Fulbright students: 1 October for the spring semester and 15 April for the autumn semester.

Type of course

Theoretical and practical subject. The course is available as a singular or elective course independent of study program, also to exchange students. The course is offered on the condition that a minimum number of students register for the course.

Admission requirements

Required:

  • A bachelor’s degree in chemistry or equivalent, with a grade C or better in the Norwegian grading system.

Students should have basic knowledge in organic and physical chemistry or physics.

Course overlap

If you pass the examination in this course, you will get an reduction in credits (as stated below), if you previously have passed the following courses:

K-333 Nuclear magnetic resonance 9 stp
KJE-8303 Nuclear Magnetic Resonance 10 stp

Course content

NMR has become a routine technique for chemists working in the fields of organic-, medicinal- and structural chemistry and biology, and new developments have made it possible to analyze more and more complex molecules and their interactions in biological systems. The course focuses on developing both theoretical and practical skills in using NMR as a tool for structure determination and elucidation as well as the characterization of biological macromolecules. In addition to recording and analyzing routine one-dimensional spectra of different nuclei, more advanced two- and three-dimensional techniques will be examined and applied in solving problems related to structure and dynamics.

Recommended prerequisites

KJE-3301 Organic Chemistry 2

Objectives of the course

After passing the exam, you as a student will:

Knowledge:

  • have a profound understanding of the physical principles of NMR
  • understand the NMR instrument and how it is built
  • know the underlying theory of the common NMR experiments
  • know how different sample properties and instrument settings affect the NMR spectra
  • understand the principles of bioNMR

Skills:

  • know how to plan NMR experiments to solve scientific problems
  • know how to operate the NMR instrument and optimize experiments
  • be able to treat and interpret 1D and 2D data

General competence:

  • have an overview of the NMR field

Language of instruction and examination

The language of instruction is English and all of the syllabus material is in English.

Teaching methods

Lectures: 26 h, Seminars/exercises: 20 h.

Assessment

Four hour written examination. Examination questions will be given in English, and may be answered either in English or Norwegian/Scandinavian language. Lettergrades (A-F).Candidates who do not pass the exam may register for a continuation exam.
