Admission requirements

The student has to be a member of the ARCTOS PhD network to participate to this course. PhD students are exempt from semester fee.

Who can appy:

  • UiT PhD students who wants to take a course that is not approved in their instruction component
  • PhD student enrolled at another institution than UiT

Who can apply as a singular course student:

  • PhD student enrolled at another institution than UiT. PhD students must upload a document from their university stating that there are registered PhD students. This group of applicants does not have to prove English proficiency and are exempt from semester fee.
  • Holders of a master´s degree of five years or 3+2 years (or equivalent) may be admitted.
    These applicants must upload a Master´s Diploma with Diploma Supplement / English translation of the diploma. Applicants from listed countries must document proficiency in English. Course content

The course lasts for the whole PhD study. The student will have to attend monthly meetings on selected topics throughout the PhD period (ARCTOS colloquium). In addition, the student will have to present the progress of his/her thesis (early, middle and final phase), in front of other students, post-docs and senior scientists. Two senior ARCTOS members act as censors and give feedback on the presentation.

In addition, students have to attend a 4-day meeting once a year (ARCTOS Days), where students gather for two days to discuss scientific and practical issues connected to the functioning of the PhD school. Usually, students organize a half-day workshop on a soft skill topic, such as presentation technique, leadership skills, etc. The other two days all ARCTOS members meet. Students and seniors give presentations, attend a poster session and discuss the functioning of the network, project proposals, etc.


Objectives of the course

To introduce the students to write a thesis and to make research and publications plans. To discuss arctic marine ecological issues based upon the students' PhD plans and theses.

Active participation in seminars, discussions and presentations.

Assessment

Presentation of PhD thesis (early, middle and final phase), assessed during the last semester.
Grade: Pass/fail.
