PSY-8016 Research presentations - 3 ECTS

Type of course

The course is a mandatory course for all students being admitted to the Student Research Program in Psychology. It can not be taken as a single course.

The course is a mandatory course for all students being admitted to the Student Research Program in Psychology. It can not be taken as a single course.

Course content

This is a course that students have to take who are admitted to Student Research Program in Psychology.  They start the course at the beginning of their year of full research and will end at the end of the full year of research.

The purpose of the course is to train the students  in their skills to present, discuss, and defend their research.

The course will start in the fall when the students start their full year of research. Students will present their research project. In the fall semester this will be within their small group where the other students will act as opponents.In the spring semester this will be within the department’s research seminar. 

In addition to classes about research presentation skills, topics such as publishing in psychology, choices of scientific journals, open access, and data management will be discussed.


Objectives of the course

At the end of the course, the students are expected to be able to:

Knowledge:

  • Present his/her research on a high scientific level
  • Defend his/her research
  • Comment constructively on critical evaluations of his/her research

Skills:

  • Develop his/her critical thinking towards different research projects (including their own and other research projects)
  • Communicate research results to a scientific audience
  • Participate in a scientific discourse

General competence:

  • Present and evaluate research projects

Teaching methods

The course requires each participating student to present his/her research project twice (one is a work requirements and one is the exam), and also to function as opponents for other students.

The lecturer will provide the students with information about presentation techniques and feedback on their presentations.


Assessment

COURSEWORK REQUIREMENTS:

The course has the following coursework requirements:

  • The students are expected to attend 80% of all classes (that means each student needs to at least attend 8 classes).
  • In at least one case, they have to be an opponent for another presenting student.
  • The students have to give a presentation about their research projects.

The coursework presentation will be assessed approved/ not approved.

 

EXAM:

Each student will give a presentation about their research project. The presentation will be assessed as pass/fail.

NB: the exam presentation is additional to the coursework requirements

 

RE-TAKE EXAM:

In the case of not passing, the student has to re-take the presentations in the following semester.
