Course content

Geometric optics: Image and image formation. Reflection at spherical mirrors, thin lenses. Principle of cameras and telescopes.

Physical optics: Radiative transfer in a turbid medium (exemplified by the atmosphere and/or ocean). Introduction to some properties, deriving the equation of radiative transfer (RTE). Analytical solutions of the RTE for some special cases. Writing a trivial Monte Carlo model which is used for numerical solutions of more general cases.

Objectives of the course

i) What is an image? Basic knowledge in design of image forming optical instruments.

ii) Radiative transfer in turbid media, analytical and numerical determinations of the radiative field.
