STE6215 Control Engineering I - 5 ECTS

Theoretical subject. Cannot be taken as a single subject.

Admission requirements

A relevant undergraduate bachelor Engineering programme with minimum 30 credits Mathematics/statistics topics

Suggested pre-requisites: Basic knowledge of linear systems and matrix/linear algebra.


Course content

Mathematical models of dynamic systems, Input-output descriptions, State-space descriptions, Linearization, State-space realization of input-output descriptions. Coordinate transformations, Stability, Lyapunov functions, Frequency domain analysis and synthesis, Controllability and stabilizability, Eigenvalue assignment, Linear quadratic optimal control, Algebraic Riccati equation. Observability and detectability, Observers, Output feedback, Separation principle. Reduced order observer, Integral control, Digital control: discretization of analogue controllers, direct discrete control synthesis.

Objectives of the course

After completing the subject, the candidate will have the following learning outcome:

Knowledge:

Gain knowledge of fundamental concepts and for analysis and synthesis of control systems

  • in a state-space, time domain framework
  • in frequency domain

Skills:

  • The candidate will be able to apply common techniques and tools for design of control systems in time and frequency domain, including basic computer aided methods

General competence:

  • The candidate will be able to demonstrate understanding of central, associated principles and concepts.

Teaching methods

Lectures: 10 x 4 lecture hours. Exercises. One hand-in assignment: Carried out in small groups.

3 h written exam. Assessment according to standard A-F grading scale.
