STE6301 Structural Analysis in Engineering - 5 ECTS

Application deadline

Applicants from Nordic countries: 1 June for the autumn semester and 1 December for the spring semester. Exchange students and Fulbright students: 1 October for the spring semester and 15 April for the autumn semester.

The course may be taken as a single subject.

Admission requirements

A relevant undergraduate bachelor Engineering programme with minimum 30 points mathematics/statistics.

Recommended prerequisites: A course which in content corresponds to Mathematics 3 and Mechanics 1.

Course content

The course will provide an introduction to some important topics in analysis of some key structural elements. The beam equation, advanced stability analysis of beam-columns and Rigid frames.

Objectives of the course

Knowledge

After completing this course the candidate:

  • has thorough knowledge of some theories and methods in the field of engineering design (K2)
  • can apply knowledge to new areas within the academic field of numerical and analytical calculations, computations, systematic design process, computational methods, engineering design (K3)

Skills

After complete this course the candidate:

  • can analyze existing theories, and interpretations in the field of engineering design and work independently on practical and theoretical problems (S2)

General competence

After complete this course the candidate:

  • can apply the knowledge and skills within engineering design in new areas in order to carry out advanced assignments and projects (GC2)
  • can communicate about academic issues, analyses and conclusions in the field of engineering design, both with specialists and the general public (GC4)

Lectures and problem solving.

Assessment

Mandatory tasks: At the start of the written exam, the students bring with them a predefined report in two paper copies. This report can be used by the students during the written exam, and the report will count as part of the exam (there will be no separate grade for the report). The whole material, also the report, has to be delivered at the end of the exam.

Examination and report will form the basis of the overall assessment.

Exam: 3 hour written exam

Access to the continuation exam, if it is held, requires that the professor must approve the report within 1 month after the regular examination is held. Remember to take care of the report, since it has to be delivered on a possible continuation exam. Grading will be done by using A-F grading scale, F is Fail. There will be no separate grade for the report.
