SOK-3050 Advanced topics in economics - 10 ECTS

Type of course

This course can not be taken as a singular course.

Course content

The course is an in-depth study and integration course for students at Masters level in Economics. The course is a preparation for thesis writing. For that reason, the course will give practical advices in terms of writing a thesis as well as facilitate the students to present their own thesis proposals. The intention is that the thesis proposals will be used as a basis for the Master thesis which will be written the following semester.

Students who have successfully completed the course  have achieved the following learning outcomes:

Knowledge

 

  • The candidate has advanced knowledge about theoretical concepts and ideas relevant in the field of economics
  • The candidate has specialized insight in a limited area that is relevant for later work on a master thesis
  • The candidate has thorough knowledge in philosophy of science and use of methods in the field of economics
  • The candidate can develop and present problem formulations based in economic theory, tradition and history

 

Skills

 

  • The candidate can analyze and apply different information sources to formulate and structure economic reasoning
  • The candidate can use relevant methods to analyze different problem formulations in the field of economics
  • The candidate can analyze existing theories, methods, and interpretations within the field of economics and is able to work independent with practical and theoretical problem solving
  • The candidate can develop an independent and limited research project

 

General competence

 

  • The candidate can analyze relevant research ethical problems within the field of economics
  • The candidate can apply its knowledge and skills in new areas to complete the later work on a master thesis
  • The candidate can communicate a problem for a later master thesis within the field of economics to both specialists and the public.

English

Teaching methods

The course has multiple teaching approaches. The students need to be present at campus, and participate in lectures and possibly group-work.

Assessment

Exam:

Termpaper (100 %).

A graded scale of five marks from A to E for pass and F for fail.

 

Work Requirement:

Presentation of the thesis proposal

 

There will be no re-sit exam arranged for this course.
