Course content

Introduction. Satellites and platform technologies. Orbits for communication satellite systems. Wave Propagation in free space. Atmospheric effects on radio signals. Antenna Gain,-space and BW. Radio Noise, calculating the noise temperature. Link Budget, spotsbeam and safety margins. Transmission of digital data in satellite communication systems. Modulations technology, channel weighting. Backoff in communication systems and link performance. Link Quality. Multiple access methods (FDMA, TDMA, CDMA). Multibeam satellite network. Ground Stations. Antenna Types. System Components, Low Noise Amplifiers, Power Amplifiers. The transmitter and receiver total systems. Modern satellite communication systems.

Objectives of the course

The course will provide students with an overview of elements that are essential for efficient, reliable and robust communications between satellites and stationary and mobile communication equipment on the ground.

Teaching methods

Lectures and practical exercises + task with satellite communications equipment.

Assessment

3 h written exam, grading will be done by using A-F grading scale, where F is a fail. A re-sit exam will be arranged for this course
