HIF-3021 Phonology II - 10 ECTS

Application deadline

Applicants from Nordic countries: 1 June for the spring semester and 1 December for the autumn semester. Exchange students and Fulbright students: 1 October for the spring semester and 15 April for the autumn semester.

Type of course

This course is mandatory in the Master's Degree Programme in Theoretical Linguistics. This course may be taken as a single course by students who hold a Bachelor's Degree in language/linguistics or a degree combining language/linguistics and literature. Students applying for admission must have a grade average of at least a C. We recomment that you have taken HIF-3022 Phonology I in the fall term before you take this course. Students who do not match the above criteria should consult the lecturer or the student advisor for more information.

Course content

The course is based on HIF-3022 Phonology I and deals with the relationship between phonology and other cognitive domains. More specifically, the following issues will be addressed:

  • The relationship between phonology and morphology/syntax
  • The relationship between phonology and first language acquisition
  • The relationship between phonology and phonetics
  • The relationship between phonology and lexicon

A central issue will be whether the phonological patterns visible across languages are caused by the interaction between universal grammar and other cognitive areas.

Objectives of the course

Knowledge:- of theoretical approaches and problems regarding the interfaces of phonology with other modules of grammar - of the development of phonological systems in language learning and the major theoretical problems and explanations in this area

Skills:- ability to critically discuss theoretical proposals on the interaction of phonology and other modules of grammar and on problems in the acquisition of phonology - ability to connect methods and insights from more than one subfield of linguistics in the independently analysis of data - advanced skills in the communication of scientific, in particular phonological, problems and their solution(s)

Language of instruction and examination is English.

Teaching methods

Lectures, exercises, seminars, project work.

Quality assurance:

All courses undergo a halfway evaluation once in a 2-year period at the master¿s level. The Programme Board determines which programme options will be evaluated per year, and which courses will be evaluated by the students and the teacher per year.


Assessment

Coursework requirements:Students are required to hand in 6 of a total of 8 homework assignments given, within the time limits set by the lecturer(s). This portfolio has to contain at least one assignment from each of the 4 thematic blocks of the course.

The obligatory coursework requirements must be approved in order to take the final exam.Assessment method: Term paper (7000 words)

Performance in the course will be assessed on an A-F grades scale. Grades are A-E for passed and F for failed. A re-sit examination is offered in the event of an F grade. The deadline to register for a re-sit examination is January 15th for the autumn semester and August 15th for the spring semester.
