NOR-0033F Norwegian for Foreign Students, Step II - 20 ECTS

Type of course

Compulsory course

Candidates need to have passed the final exam of Step I.


Course content

The key focus of Step II is work on non-fictional prose about Norwegian daily life and society, and a few texts of fictional literature. The students continue to work on key topics in grammar and syntax, and gradually focus more on irregular forms and idiomatic expressions. The syllabus texts will be about Norwegian history, literature, culture and society. The instruction in speech and writing focuses on enabling students to express themselves in a way that facilitates communication. They should be able to write about topics that are discussed in class, and express their own opinions.

Objectives of the course

The candidate is expected to:

 

Knowledge and understanding:

  • Be able to understand relatively simple speech and writing about everyday and academic topics

Skills:

  • Be able to talk about everyday and academic subjects with a fairly good pronunciation
  • Be able to read and understand the syllabus texts and simple authentic texts
  • Be able to write about everyday and academic subjects that have been discussed in the course

Competence:

Gain a vocabulary of appr. 2000 words, and a fairly good command of the central traits of Norwegian grammar and syntax.

Seminars, lectures and language lab sessions with practical exercises

The course quality is subject to student evaluation in the course of the study period.


Assessment

The following compulsory assignments need to be handed in and passed in order for the student to qualify for the exam:

- 8 written assignments, assessed and approved by the teacher.

- All teaching is compulsory, and an 80% attendance rate is required in order for students to qualify for the exam.

Step II concludes with an exam consisting of a 4-hour written exam and an oral exam. Together, the two exams make up an average pass or fail grade. Students who need to retake an exam will only have to redo the one they failed.

In case a student fails an exam, or can document a valid reason for absence, a re-sit examination will be offered.
