Assessment

The Step III exam is the formal equivalent of the Advanced Level Norwegian Language Test, the so-called `Bergen Test¿

The following compulsory assignments need to be handed in and passed in order for the student to qualify for the exam:

- 7 written assignments, assessed and approved by the teacher.

-All teaching is compulsory, and an 80% attendance rate is required in order for students to qualify for the exam.

The examination at the end of Step III takes place across two days and consists of

  • a 6-hour written exam that includes
  • listening comprehension  - 1 hour
  • text comprehension, writing assignments and grammar questions - 2 hours
  • text production - 3 hours

The candidate¿s performance in text production is decisive for the average written exam grade.

  • An oral exam evaluating pronunciation, communication skills

and knowledge of the syllabus.

Candidates need to pass both the oral and written exam. The oral exam accounts for 40 % and the written exam 60 % of the final grade. The students receive one average grade.  The exam tests the candidates¿ general language proficiency and exam questions are therefore not tied to specific syllabus texts.  The evaluation places great emphasis on communicative skills, but also rewards the capacity to express oneself without serious errors. Otherwise, evaluation criteria correspond to the pedagogical aims of Step I-III. Students who fail only one of either the written or oral exam only needs to redo that part of the final exam.

A nationally recognized external examiner assesses all exam answers.

The Norwegian grading system is an A-F scale in which A is the highest score and F is fail.

In case a student fails an exam, or can document a valid reason for absence, a re-sit examination will be offered at the beginning of the next semester.
