FYS-8007 Microwave techniques - 10 ECTS

Programstudents may register for the course through Studentweb. The registration deadline is September 1st/February 1st.

Other PhD students at UiT and external applicants may apply for admission through Søknadsweb, application code 9301. The application deadline is June 1st for the autumn semester and December 1st for the spring semester.

Admission requirements

PhD students or holders of a Norwegian master´s degree of five years or three + two years (or equivalent) may be admitted. Only students with a background in physics, or another discipline which provides the student with the relevant knowledge, may be admitted. Students are expected to have skills equivalent to the prerequisites listed for the course.

PhD students are exempt from semester fee.

All external applicants have to attach a confirmation of their status as a PhD student from their home institution. Students who hold a Master of Science degree, but are not yet enrolled as a PhD-student have to attach a copy of their master's degree diploma. These students are also required to pay the semester fee. More information regarding PhD courses at the Faculty of Science and Technology is found here. The course will only be taught if there is a sufficient number of students.  


Course content

The course covers fundamental concepts within microwave techniques. These concepts include transmission line theory, impedance matching, analysis and design of waveguides and transmission lines, microwave resonators, microwave network analysis, fundamental passive components, in addition to filter theory and design. In addition, active components such as amplifiers of various types will be covered. Exercises will be emphasized.

Objectives of the course

Knowledge - The studen can:

  • understand basic building blocks of microwave systems
  • give an overview of the design and implementation stages of microwave systems
  • identify the physical principle behind a range of both passive and active microwave elements
  • explain microwave design principles as well as transmission and propagation of microwaves in lossy media
  • evaluate strength and weakness of microwave design tools

Skills - The student can:

  • analyze and quantify the overall performance of microwave systems
  • derive and understand generalized transmission theory describing dynamic behavior and response of microwave systems
  • explain the concept performance parameters associated to microwaves in lumped elements and on printed circuit boards

General competence - The student can:

  • understand the physical principles of electromagnetic waves in homogeneous and heterogeneous media
  • appreciate the technological applications that can be realized based on microwave transmission and observation theory  


Language of instruction

The language of instruction is English and all of the syllabus material is in English. Examination questions will be given in English, but may be answered either in English or a Scandinavian language.

Lectures: 45 hours Exercises: 30 hours Laboratory exercises: 20 hours

Assessment

Portfolio assessment of a mid-term assignment counting about 20 % and a final 4 hour written examination counting about 80 %. All components in the portfolio are assessed as a whole and one combined grade is given.

Assessment scale: Letter grades A-F.

Re-sit examination (section 22): There is no access to a re-sit examination in this course.

Postponed examination (sections 17 and 21): Students with valid grounds for absence will be offered a postponed examination. Postponed mid-term assignment is arranged during the semester if possible, otherwise early in the following semester. Postponed written examination is held early in the following semester.
