Application deadline

Application deadline is 1 December for Spring semester and 1 June for Autumn semester. Application code 9303 in Søknadsweb.

Registration for class and exam in Studentweb by 1 February for Spring semester and 1 September for Autumn semester.

Ph.d.-students at UiT The Arctic University of Norway go directly to Studentweb to register for class and exam. Others have to apply, and be graned admission prior to register for class and exam.

Admission requirements

The student has to be a member of the ARCTOS PhD School to participate to this course. PhD students are exempt from semester fee.

PhD students at UiT register for the course through StudentWeb. The registration for spring semester starts in the middle of December, and for autumn semester in the middle of June.

Other applicants apply for admission through SøknadsWeb. Application code 9303.

Course content

The course lasts for the whole PhD study. The student will have to attend monthly meetings on selected topics throughout the PhD period (ARCTOS colloquium). In addition, the student will have to present the progress of his/her thesis (early, middle and final phase), in front of other students, post-docs and senior scientists. Two senior ARCTOS members act as censors and give feedback on the presentation.

In addition, students have to attend a 4-day meeting once a year (ARCTOS Days), where students gather for two days to discuss scientific and practical issues connected to the functioning of the PhD school. Usually, students organize a half-day workshop on a soft skill topic, such as presentation technique, leadership skills, etc. The other two days all ARCTOS members meet. Students and seniors give presentations, attend a poster session and discuss the functioning of the network, project proposals, etc.


Objectives of the course

To introduce the students to write a thesis and to make research and publications plans. To discuss arctic marine ecological issues based upon the students' PhD plans and theses.

Presentation of PhD thesis (early, middle and final phase). Pass/fail.
