Admission requirements are generell studiekompetanse + REALFA. Local admission, application code 9336 - singular courses in natural sciences. The course is also available to exchange students and free-movers.

Course content

The course focuses on the physical understanding of the concept of energy and how energy production and consumption influence the environment. Different forms of sustainable energy will be outlined which includes hydro, tidal, wave and wind power, solar energy, bioenergy, nuclear fission and nuclear fusion. These resources will be compared with the fossil energy resources: natural gas, oil and coal. The course will aswell discuss different solutions for energy storage and transport.

FYS-0100 Basic physics, MAT-1001 Calculus 1

Objectives of the course

Knowledge - The student will be able to:

  • describe different energy resources, transformations and consumption
  • explain sustainable energy sources and their potential
  • identify different types of scientific communication

 

Skills - The student will be able to:

  • analyze steam engines in terms of thermodynamics and electricity production
  • derive the main equations describing the energy in the following sustainable sources: thermal, geothermal, tidal, wave, wind, solar, biomass and nuclear energy
  • calculate the energy production from different power plants

 

General expertise - The student will be able to:

  • locate relevant information from different sources
  • work together, solve problems and discuss findings in groups
  • express a good oral communication skill in class
  • express a good communication skill in scientific writing

Language of instruction and examination

The language of instruction is English and all of the syllabus material is in English. Examination questions will be given in English, but may be answered either in English or a Scandinavian language.

Teaching methods

Lectures: 40 hours Exercises: 30 hours

Assessment

Portfolio assessment of up to 3 assigments counting 30 % and a final 4 hour written examination counting 70 %. All components in the portfolio are assessed as a whole and one combined grade is given. Assessment scale: Letter grades A-F. Re-sit examination (section 22): Students having failed the last ordinary examination are offered a re-sit examination early in the following semester, if the course is compulsory in their study programme, otherwise given that an examination is already being arranged. 4 hour written examination counting 100 %. Postponed examination (sections 17 and 21): Students with valid grounds for absence will be offered a postponed examination. Postponed portfolio assessment of up to 3 assigments is arranged during the semester if possible, otherwise early in the following semester. Postponed written examination is held early in the following semester.
