spring 2016
KJE-8308 Organometallic compounds in organic synthesis - 10 ECTS
Admission requirements
To take PhD courses you need to have at least a master's degree or equivalent.
In addition the following knowledge is required: Basic knowledge of organic chemistry.
PhD students at UiT The Arctic University of Norway register for the course through StudentWeb . Registrations for the spring semester starts December 1st, unless an earlier date is specified in the application deadline.
External applicants apply for admission through SøknadsWeb. Registrations for the spring semester starts October 1st.
All external applicants have to attach a confirmation of their status as a PhD student from their home institution.
Students who hold a Master of Science degree, but are not yet enrolled as a PhD-student have to attach a copy of their master's degree diploma. These students are also required to pay the semester fee.
More information regarding PhD courses at the Faculty of Science and Technology is found here.
Course content
Organometallic chemistry is the chemistry of transition metals used in organic synthesis and is routinely used by synthetic chemists.
The course starts with the description of organometallic complexes in terms of electron configuration, bonding and structure. Reaction mechanisms and reactivity of complexes containing different transition metals and ligands are then introduced and applied in the analysis of complex synthetic transformations.
Objectives of the course
After passing the exam, you as a student will:
Knowledge:
- know how to use the 18-electron rule
- understand how to determine the oxidation state of metals in complexes
- have an understanding of bonding in organometallic complexes
- recognize different organometallic reaction mechanisms
Skills:
- be capable of drawing reaction mechanisms for organometallic reactions
- have the ability to compare the reactivity of catalysts
- recognize the most common named reactions
General competence:
- be able to deduce the reaction mechanism of organometallic reactions
- be able to follow reaction sequences in scientific literature
- know how to choose organometallic reagents for complex transformations
- have knowledge about the most common named organometallic reactions
Assessment
Four hour written examination. Examination questions will be given in English, and may be answered either in English or Norwegian/Scandinavian language. Lettergrades (A-F).
Students will give (at least) one lecture during the course, must have approved all writing assignments, and will write a report on a given subject.
Candidates who do not pass the exam may register for a continuation exam.
