Populærvitenskapelig sammendrag av avhandlingen/ Summary of the thesis:

Suicide is a cause of much concern among Indigenous Sámi. This thesis investigates how Sámi in Norway and Sweden understand suicide, and what suicide prevention initiatives have targeted Sámi in the Nordic countries (Norway, Sweden and Finland) from 2005 to 2019.

The findings show that Sámi understand suicide as acts that take place and make sense to other Sámi when individuals are unable to maintain their Sámi identity. Shortcomings in mental health services for Sámi, strong Sámi networks that increase the impacts of suicide, and internal as well as external threats that lead to Sámi struggling were suggested as factors increasing the risk of suicide. Furthermore, analysis of seventeen prevention initiatives showed that most focused on addressing shortcomings on individual and relational (strengthening peer support) levels, and raising awareness in the general public, while some sought to broaden perspectives in prevention planning, improving health systems for Sámi, and promoting cultural empowerment among Sámi.

Initiatives seldom included thorough evaluation components, suggesting a need to increase support in planning and carrying out evaluations.
