Palaeo diet & nutritional archaeology: a comparison between Japan and northern Norway

Norges arktiske universitetsmuseum inviterer til forskningsseminar med stipendiat Aya Komatsu, UM.

We are what we eat, but do we eat what we are? Food is obviously essential for sustaining life, but it is also culture. Nutritional archaeology seeks to establish the dietary intake of the past population and relate this to health, nutrition, and culture.

In this presentation, the concepts of nutritional archaeology will be outlined, and how it can be applied to study dietary and nutritional intake of the Jomon (ca. 16,000-2,500 cal BP) and the Gressbakken (4,500-3,800 cal BP) populations will be discussed.
