Gender and (Im)mobilities in the Context of Work - an international interdisciplinary conference

The Centre for Women and Gender Research (Kvinnforsk)
UiT The Arctic University of Norway, Tromsø, Norway
June 15-17, 2016

Deadline for registration (without paper), April 24, 2016.

The gendered constellations of (im)mobilities include movements of bodies, ideas, commodities and services within changing living situations and contexts. We focus on the work of gender and the gendered meaning of work in mobility studies. How “things move or are anchored” while also being inscribed in, performed, produced by and productive of gender. What theoretical, methodological and empirical findings transpire when bringing a gender lens to research on work and (Im)mobilities? What are the possible implications of such findings for the society at large? Such questions require research that expands horizons, challenges our thinking, and asks new questions. Our aim is to provide an arena for such great tasks!

We are proud to present following distinguished scholars as the conference keynote speakers: Linda McDowell, Stuart Aitken, Robyn Mayes and Marianna Pavlovskaya.

We welcome submissions of papers that address these challenges and examine the relationship between gender and work-related mobilities and immobilities, between home and work, across different labor markets and industrial sectors as well as in diverse local, regional, national, international and cross-border contexts.  We intend to highlight the connections between gender and work by exploring precariousness, intersections and entanglements created by linkages and ruptures of mobility.

The abstract should be of 200 words (maximum). Paper presentations should be 15–20 minutes in length. Participants will be asked to share their paper draft with the other participants before the conference (June 5 2016). In order to facilitate the dialog, we expect fellow participants to read the papers for their sessions beforehand and a discussant will be assigned to each paper to make comments. We invite work in progress and more finished texts. The conference accepts all submitted abstracts.
