Film: Aco and Slavica's Farm

Master's degree examination film in Master of Philosophy in Visual Cultural Studies:

"Aco and Slavica's Farm" by Marnix Eichelberg

We follow Aco and Slavica, and their family and friends during their daily lives on their farm in Vapila, Macedonia. Aco and Slavica have around 220 sheep with which they roam the surrounding landscape for grazing. The old seasonal river hasn't flown for many years and the valley is drying out. This means that Aco and Slavica have to be more creative in finding good pastural grounds. They take the sheep out twice a day for many hours on long routes through the landscape to fields which are further and further from their farm.

Aco and Slavica also grow wheat in several fields in the valley, but the hired combine which harvests the wheat is so expensive that it almost literally eats up all the profit.

Aco and Slavia are two of the very few remaining shepherds in the valley. So many others around them have left Vapila for lives in the nearby city of Ohrid, in Skopje, the capital of the country, or for lives abroad.
