Model Arctic Council: Learn about Arctic affairs and get experience in international negotiations!

Model Arctic Council is a role-play of the Arctic Council where you will get a real experience of international negotiations in the central intergovernmental forum for cooperation in the Arctic. The experience includes a lecture on the Arctic Council's mode of operation and negotiation skills in international negotiations, meetings with AC’s officials and an excursion to the Arctic Council Secretariat.

How does it work?
You will be assigned a role as one of the actors within the Arctic Council: Arctic States, Permanent Participants (indigenous people’s organisations), Working Group members and Observers, and presented with a scenario for the simulation.

An important part of your preparation is to write a position paper, reflecting your actor’s policy or stance on the issue. To this end you will have to do research on your actor's foreign (Arctic) policy, interests and objectives. Having a position paper is crucial during the actual negotiations. You will have the opportunity to get feedback on your position paper before the simulation.

Through a precise simulation of the Arctic Council Working Group and Senior Arctic Officials meetings you will be acquainted with the real work of the Arctic Council. During the role-play you will discuss and negotiate a solution to a problem based on a given scenario, playing the role of your assigned actor.
