The Work of Gender in the Lives of Children and Young People - an International Symposium

UiT The Arctic University of Norway, October 28-30, 2015
Chair: Hanne Haavind, Adjunct Professor, Centre for Women and Gender Research (KVINNFORSK)

(Vi har laget en egen invitasjon til profesjonsutdanningene ved UiT)

The overarching aim of the symposium is to create a meeting place for the development of gender sensitive analytical strategies that have the capacity to move beyond the mere “measurement” of gender differences. The participants will get a chance to address and discuss gendered meanings as evoked during age transitions and as negotiated and challenged across social contexts.

We ask:
How does gender come in to play in the social participation of boys and girls as they are growing older? In what ways do boys and girls themselves engage with gendered meanings in their personal appropriation of who they are could possibly be? Will gendered power relations be reproduced, challenged or transformed through processes of  same gender or cross gender identification?

We welcome papers that address:

  • Children’s lives in schools and daycare – in formal contexts like the classroom as well as in informal context with friends and peers
  • Children’s lives and professional services – how children and young people are transferred and included into professional health and social welfare services
  • Children’s lives and social media
  • The place of  children and young people in generational transmissions
  • Theoretical and methodological issues concerning gender as categories of identity and social exclusion/inclusion, and gender as markers evoking emotional responses in relationships.

In particular we want to invite papers from people who have worked with the social participation of children in empirical studies, but who have so far been reluctant to include gender in their analyses. This is an opportunity to bring negotiations about gender distinctions and gendered identifications to the forefront. The messages from the keynote speakers, the organization of papers into Symposia and Panels with related topics, and the distribution of Commentators to these Symposia will all contribute to some challenging and fruitful days in Tromsø.
