Ectopic and normal maxillary canine eruption: maxillary incisor root resorption and interceptive treatment

Kort populærvitenskapelig sammendrag av avhandlingen:

The upper canines erupt in an abnormal position in 1–5 percent of children, possibly leading to damaged front teeth and the need for comprehensive dental treatment. This thesis aimed to provide new knowledge of the extent of damage to the roots of upper front teeth, and to assess the effect of treatment methods intended to normalize canine eruption.

The study found that root damage caused by canines is common on front teeth, but not severe in most children. Headgear treatment had a positive effect on the upper canine eruption, but merits further study before being implemented in children with abnormal canines. Extraction of the primary canine alone was as beneficial as extraction of both the primary canine and first molar of children with palatal displaced canines. In conclusion, monitoring canine eruption in children is important, as adverse effects are common and extraction of the primary upper canine is currently the best preventative treatment for abnormally erupting canines.
