Populating Coastal Landscapes

International Conference at Alta Museum Sept. 25-27 2018

Foragers have long inhabited Arctic and Subarctic coastal regions. Here marine resources are often plentiful and stable, allowing for more sedentary settlement patterns, while at the same time long distance mobility and transport is supported by the use of boats or sledges. Archaeologically, relatively fixed bases are many places manifested through clusters of pit houses or similar types of dwellings.

This international conference will explore how we can populate such coastal regions archaeologically. It will present a diversity of archaeological approaches to prehistoric demography and the particular opportunities and challenges offered by northern coastal land- and seascapes. We wish to explore the processes of populating the landscape were impacted by topography, resource variability, climatic fluctuations, settlement structures, communication across landscapes and seascapes, as well as social and technological developments. This will allow us to discuss the dynamics between demographic structure, environmental factors and socio-cultural or economic strategies.
