Cultural and practical issues in migrant health

Centre for Arctic and Global Health and Research Network for Refugee Health are happy to invite you to a joint presentation by Annabella Böttcher from Syddansk Universitet and network meeting Monday 5 February between 13-15 o'clock. Annabelle will talk about cultural and practical issues health personnel come across when meeting patients from different cultural backgrounds.

The venue for the seminar and the following meeting will be at the Faculty of Health Sciences, more specifically in auditorium 9. Annabelle’s talk is scheduled at 1 pm and we expect a time frame of 35-45 minutes for the presentation + questions. Then the network meeting will begin immediately after Annabelle’s presentation.

During the network meeting we will update each other and Annabelle regarding the refugee health related work at UiT and explore whether there are common interests. Those participants of Annabelle's talk who are not members of the network are welcome to participate in the network meeting.

Here is Annabelle’s own description of the presentation:

I explore the modalities of body- and space-management by Muslim Middle Eastern (MME) patients and doctors in the Danish health care system. The main questions are those mentioned below: Which cultural elements (like language) are considered obstacles or challenges by whom? Who can be alone with whom in closed rooms? How do room arrangements have to be made to make (especially for female Muslim) patients to be more comfortable? Who has to be chaperoned by whom? Who can touch whose body parts during medical examinations? Which parts of the body need to remain covered under which circumstances? (operations, exam by gynecologist etc.) Who can take which medication? (forbidden substances like pig and alcohol) What role do religious (Muslim) authorities play in this?

To give you a more concrete idea of the implementation of this research, here two sub-projects: I am contributing to the design of a research project with the gynecological and obstetric department of the Sygehus Lillebælt in Kolding Hospital to explore the (cultural) preferences of Syrian women before, during and after birth. In Berlin, I am organizing a conference with my colleagues from the Charité University Hospital and the “Association of Syrian Doctors in Germany” to facilitate the integration of Syrian medical staff in the German high skilled labour market. It will be sponsored by the Robert-Bosch-Foundation and the Bertelsmann Foundation, both prestigious foundations with large budgets designated to health research/management. For Denmark (and Scandinavia in general), it makes sense to increase the cooperation with Germany on health management, patient diversity management, because in the coming years Germany is forced to develop its capacities in managing with MME patients and health staff. And I am quite sure, that they could use more support of their Scandinavian neighbors!

Coffee and snacks will be served!
