Chemicals from oil and gas are used to make products such as clothes, plastics, pharmaceuticals and fuels. But oil and gas are not renewable resources. It has been estimated that the earth's oil reserves will run out in about 50 years. In the future, how can we make the products that we now make out of oil?
One suggestion is to use CO2. The CHOCO project at UiT (site.uit.no/choco) develops processes for conversion of CO2 to more valuable molecules, such as pharmaceuticals. CHOCO project leader Kathrin Hopmann will discuss how CO2 can be converted using chemical or biological catalysts and what opportunities and challenges there are in using CO2 as a replacement for oil.
