«Although the Sámi schools in Sweden have offered primary education for Sámi children since 1940's, a course given in the spring 2016  was the first time that the academic course offerings in Sweden included a didactic course directed to the language and culture teachers already  working in the Sámi schools or as mother tongue teachers out in the municipalities. Considering that the Sámi schools and municipal schools, pre-school institutions and active Sámi teachers have for a long time witnessed that there is an urgent need to educate and train new teachers  with knowledge on matters concerning the Sámi the effort is coming remarkably late.

All this being said, the Sámi educational scene is evolving from within. The learner and the teacher communities are growing in Sápmi, and local  and regional adult education institutions that offer programs related to the Sámi culture have started to take notice on the needs expressed by the

Sámi community. Several Sámi scholars are now investigating the position of the Sámi perspective and Indigenous knowledge in schools and in  the curricula around Northern Scandinavia and Finland. This lecture will provide real life examples and a view on the current issues that indicate an  important breaking point in Sámi education for the Sámi and about the Sámi. Finally, some suggestions about how to continue from here will be discussed»
