‘Australia has been the home to Indigenous people for 50,000 years before Europeans colonised the continent in 1770. The rapid European expansion disrupted the world’s longest continuous traditional culture, with unsurprising consequences for mental health and well-being of the surviving Indigenous people. Australia ranks second to Norway on the global UN Human Development Index, however if the 700,000 indigenous Australians were treated as a stand-alone country, they would rank at around 122nd in the world. A visiting Australian scientist, Rod Reeve, will present a paper on ‘An Australian Indigenous perspective on closing gaps in mental health, suicide prevention and disability outcomes’ at the Centre of Sami Studies at UiT The Arctic University of Norway on the 7th of June 2017. Rod is the CEO of a 7-year $US90 million Cooperative Research Centre for Remote Economic Participation in Australia, which has the aim of ‘using research, innovation, expertise, education and outreach to provide the knowledge base essential to create thriving remote communities and economies’.
The lunch seminar is a cooperation between the Department of Clinical Medicine, Centre for Sami Health Research and Centre for Sami Studies.
