Guest lecture by Anna Reading: The Materiality of Memory in the Globital Age

Professor Anna Reading (King's College London) is visiting UiT Tromsø for a special guest lecture on her latest research into memory studies, materialism, and globalisation.

Memory is both energetic and material but how do we understand the materiality of memory in the unevenly globalised - digitised age? This lecture traces the political economy of memory in the globital age, focussing on the rare earth Europium which is an essential component of electronics and computers. The lecture considers this in terms of the frictions and flows of political economy to illuminate the materiality of memory beyond the skin and the screen.

Professor Anna Reading has played an international role in developing the interdisciplinary field of memory studies with research in gender, memory and human rights. She has particular foci on gendered memory, migration, the holocaust, digital technologies, nonviolent struggles and resistance with work that combines her expertise as an academic and playwright.

The guest lecture is made possible by and funded by the ENCODE research group.
