One of the key points under discussion hinges on the legal status of marine genetic resources in marine areas beyond national jurisdiction, and especially in the Area, including, importantly, a legal regime for the access and the equitable sharing of benefits arising from their commercial utilization. Questions of environmental protection, distributional justice and economic opportunities intersect sometimes in conflictual ways. This workshop intends to highlight and explore some of these questions, directly, or through comparative and theoretical reflections. Presentations, held by experts in the field, will both contribute to the advancement of the academic debate and provide useful input to the ongoing negotiations.
This is a worskshop jointly organized by the K.G. Jebsen Centre for the Law of the Sea and the Institute for International Legal Studies, National Research Council of Italy. The workshop is convened by Dr. Vito De Lucia (JCLOS) and Dr. Gemma Andreone (ISGI/CNR).
