JCLOS co-organizes a side event to the UN marine biodiversity treaty negotiations in New York

On 5 April 2017, the Centre will organize in cooperation with the FNI a side event on the “possible implications of a BBNJ (biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction) Agreement for Arctic marine governance”. The side event is part of the upcoming negotiating session towards a new treaty on marine biodiversity at the United Nations in New York. These topics are part of the ongoing research at the Centre exploring legal issues related to marine areas beyond national jurisdiction.

 

The side event will discuss the possible implications of an international legally binding instrument on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction for Arctic governance. The side event will also discuss relevant Arctic initiatives for the conservation of marine biodiversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction with a view to comparing efforts and highlighting convergences and potential conflicts.

The side event will be held on 5 April, 13.15-14.30, in Conference Room 11 at UN Headquarters, on the side-lines of the third session of the Preparatory Committee for the development of an international legally binding instrument under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea on the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity of areas beyond national jurisdiction (27 March – 7 April 2017).

 

Speakers include:

  • Dr. Morten Wallø Tvedt, FNI speaking about bioprospecting in the Arctic
  • Christian Prip, FNI speaking about marine protected areas in the Arctic
  • Dr. Vito de Lucia, K.G. Jebsen Centre for the Law of the Sea speaking about whether there is a need for a special regime in the Arctic
  • Kjell Kristian Egge, the Norwegian delegation to Prepcom speaking about Arctic initiatives outside of and parallel to the BBNJ process (topic tbc).
