IMB seminar

Dr. Tim Bliss (The National Institute for Medical Research, London): LTP and Memory
Professor emeritus Terje Lømo (UiO): Scientific Discoveries: What is required for lasting impact

The Institute of Medical Biology is proud to announce that the IMB-seminar the coming Friday (August 28) will be given by Professor emeritus Terje Lømo (UiO) and Dr. Tim Bliss (The National Institute for Medical Research, London), who are recognized worldwide for their pivotal research on the neural basis of learning and memory. Their collaboration in the late 1960s in the Oslo laboratory of Per Andersen, and their 1973 paper in J. Physiol. (vol. 232, pp. 331-356), describing the phenomenon of Long-Term Potentiation (LTP), established the most widely-studied experimental model of how the brain stores memories. LTP was a truly groundbreaking discovery. It is now known to be key to our understanding of learning, memory and the brain’s ability to change in response to new conditions.

Tim Bliss will give a brief summary of the discovery and today’s understanding of LPT. Later, Terje Lømo will discuss lasting impacts, not only in the central, but also in the peripheral nervous system.
