Living Ice
Light governs the seasons in the Arctic Ocean. e polar night dominates the Arctic Ocean during winter and ice cover increases and becomes thicker. During summer the intensive sunlight and warm water from the south results in that large amounts of the ice melt. In and under the ice abundant life develops. Living ice!
The temperature in the ocean has increased markedly and during summer sea ice melts more than before both from above and below. One of the most important questions that the researchers in the research group Arctic SIZE raise is how life in the Arctic Ocean is in uenced by increased melting of sea ice.
The exhibition Living Ice is prepared by the Polar Museum – Tromsø University Museum in cooperation with the Facul- ty of Biosciences, sheries and economy, UiT The Arctic University of Norway. The exhibition is based upon research carried out by the research groups Arctic Seasonal Ice Zone (Arctic SIZE).
