BEAUTIFUL "GOO"
Lysozyme is a green enzyme that is found in tears, mucus and pus from cuts. This
example is from chickens. Most proteins that NorStruct works with have enzymatic
activity, which means that they participate actively in the breakdown and build-up of
other biological molecules. These proteins are therefore also called enzymes.
QUESTION MARK
The protein in these crystals is involved in an attack
on a salmon by the bacterium
Vibrio salmonicida
.
The crystals found a hair upon which to grow, which
is what created the question mark.
COLOURFUL
A close-up of lysozyme.
THE ON SWITCH
A human protein called kinase is widely used as a model in cancer research. This is
because the protein is one of the switches that needs to be turned off to prevent uncon-
trolled cell growth.
