Feedback like this comes often to univer-
sities these days. And while I sometimes
wonder how any education could possibly be
irrelevant, I also embrace our responsibility
to communicate with a wider audience.
At the University of Tromsø, we want to
share our work not only with a broad Nor-
wegian public, but also internationally. For
that reason, our magazine Labyrint is now
appearing for the se-
cond time in English.
In this issue, we tell
you about life in the
north and how we stu-
dy it. Although it may
be easy to think of the
high north as periphe-
ral, we find ourselves
in the middle of many
international issues.
The effects of climate
change are greater in the high north. Many
of the challenges indigenous peoples face in-
ternationally are lived out in the high north.
The best facilities for satellite monitoring in
the world are found in the high north.
Researchers and students at the University of
Tromsø are studying all of these issues, and
we share some of our work with you in the
following pages.
Our location creates opportunities for
research in many fields, but our interests are
global. We contribute new knowledge to na-
tional debates. We contribute to the broader
programs of our international research com-
munities. Stories of these contributions also
appear in this issue of Labyrint, on topics as
diverse as birth, migration, and democracy.
The breadth you see here in our rese-
arch enables us to offer
students in the north a
high-quality, competitive
education. It allows us to
prepare them to face glo-
bal challenges in the high
north and beyond.
Enjoy these stories; let
them pique your interest.
And then join us, here in
Tromsø, as we make ours-
elves even more relevant.
"Make yourselves useful.
Be more relevant."
