In 2018 UiT Norway's Arctic University was key partner of the Festspillene i Nord-Norge (Arctic Arts Festival). The Arctic Arts Festival believes in northern art, and has ambitions to become the world’s most important art festival for circumpolar areas. On the occasion of its fifty-year anniversary, UiT the Arctic University of Norway collaborated with the Arctic Arts Festival 2018 on various events during the festival.

As part of the Festspillene i Nord-Norge (Arctic Arts Festival), members of WONA established The Institute for Nature and Art. The Institute usually does not exist, but arose as an exhibition project stretching the boundaries of what an exhibition can be. During one week (23-30 June 2018), Galleri Nord-Norge was transformed into a laboratory where artists and researchers collaborated on art and research projects. By inviting each other and the audience into thee process, the Institute of Nature and Art opened up discussions across established disciplines to discuss the the relationship between art, research, artworks and the public. The Institute for Nature and Art was curated by Hanne Hammer Stien.
