At the Arctic Circle Assembly 2025 in Reykjavík (18th October 2025), Dr. Karina Larsen, Associate Professor at the Department of Technology and Safety and member of UiT Secure Societies Research Group, represented UiT in the international session “Resilience – Lessons from the Arctic.” The panel, organised by the Harvard Kennedy School’s Arctic Initiative in collaboration with Nord University, Oulu Business School, University College Cork, and UiT The Arctic University of Norway, gathered experts to discuss how Arctic communities and high-risk sectors develop resilience through practice, training, and adaptive leadership.
Dr. Larsen presented research from her forthcoming chapter “Building Resilience: Lessons from Arctic Aviation and Maritime Operations,” co-authored with Capt. Morgan Montgomery (Boeing & UiT) and Leif Erik (Leif Henrik Loe-Olsen) (Commander HEMS NLA). The chapter draws on operational case studies from Helicopter Emergency Medical Services (HEMS) in Northern Norway and comparative Arctic aviation and maritime operations to explore how resilience is enacted through anticipation, monitoring, responding, and learning. Integrating principles from aviation psychology and human factors, such as Crew Resource Management, adaptive leadership, and stress inoculation training, the work highlights how lessons from Arctic HEMS can inform broader strategies for civil preparedness and societal security.
The project received an enthusiastic preview and feedback session during one of the Secure Societies research groups regular meetings in early September, led by Associate Professor Reidar Staupe Delgado. Dr. Larsen’s participation in Reykjavík further strengthened UiT’s international visibility and reinforced the Secure Societies group’s position as a key contributor to interdisciplinary research on risk, crisis governance, and resilience education in the Arctic.
