Meaning of Life: Interdisciplinary Perspectives

International workshop in collaboration with the Ethics Research Group.

June 8-9, 2023

Description:

The meaning of life is a time-honored topic in philosophy, theology, psychology, and other disciplines. This workshop explores new avenues by researching this traditional problem in the nexus of philosophy, linguistics, the theory of interpretation, biology, and ethnology. When can we say that something has meaning? How are meanings produced? Do biological systems and organisms produce meaning? What is the meaning of non-human life? Distinguishing the meaning of life from related concepts of purpose, motivation, and satisfaction, what is the relationship between meaning-making and well-being? The workshop aims to connect various levels of analysis to arrive at a better understanding of the problem of the meaning of life.
