In October 2023, Salzburg hosted SciDataCon 2023, a part of International Data Week 2023. This global event united data experts, researchers, and industry leaders to discuss the challenges of data in research.
The Global Indigenous Data Alliance (GIDA) played a key role in shining a light on indigenous data ethics by hosting a session titled "Indigenous Data Sovereignty, FAIR, and CARE principles in practice, case studies of implementation" at SciDataCon, focusing on the application of CARE principles in diverse data systems globally.
The session featured panelists who helped develop the CARE principles, sharing case studies from their countries to illustrate how these principles are applied in different contexts. The goal was to reveal the extent of research and practices related to CARE principles, showcasing both successful and less successful examples. The session aimed to guide other groups interested in implementing ethical data frameworks, combining FAIR and CARE principles.
Gida-Sápmi itself was a case study in the session, highlighting the growing awareness and necessity for Sámi data governance. This initiative is crucial for enhancing Sámi self-governance and nation-building. Inspired by the Global Indigenous Data Alliance (GIDA), researchers across Sápmi have established a transdisciplinary network to promote Indigenous data governance awareness in educational institutions, research, and archives.
