Family council in foster care work
The project concerns the relationship between the public and private sectors in caring for children. This project is a part of the research group's established research areas of kinship foster care, children's right to participation, and family councils.
Research questions:
- What are children and young people's experiences with participation in family council?
- What connections exist between participation and the child's mental health? Exploration of the support person's role in family council.
- How is the father and father's family's involvement after family council?
- What experiences do child welfare caseworkers have regarding safeguarding the child's best interests and the child's participation in the use of the family council model?
Research methods and informants
Data collection started in the fall of 2011 and was completed in the spring of 2016. Data was collected from 92 family councils. The informants in the project are children, parents, foster parents, the child's support person from the family council, the family council's independent coordinator, and child welfare caseworkers. The informants are recruited from municipalities throughout the country where the Norwegian Directorate for Children, Youth and Family Affairs uses family councils in foster care work. The data is collected at multiple points in time and in cases involving children aged 0-20 years. In the project, we use both qualitative and quantitative research methods. See the presentation of the sample, data material, and procedures for data collection in the report "Family council in foster care work".
