arcICE hosted the IWAIS 2024 conference in Narvik. This was a proud moment for the nICE team to host this conference after 40 years in Norway. The conference went successfull and 150 partipants from all over the world particvpated and presneted their reserch work in this event.

As part of CHANGING ARCTIC initiative of UiT, The Arctic Technology & Icing Group (arcICE) is happy to announce a new PhD position on topic, ‘Floating Offshore Wind Turbine Operations in Icing Conditions’.  The research focus of this PhD is to improve understanding of the aerodynamic and structural design of floating offshore wind turbines leading to improvements enabling optimal operations in ice prone Arctic regions.

The PhD is a fixed term position for a duration of four years. The selected candidate will work in Narvik at Institute of Industrial Technology, UiT Norway. The application deadline is 1st April 2024. More details about this PhD position can be found on following weblink.

arcICE research group is collaborating with researchers of Iowa State University, USA to study the Drone's operation in icing conditions. Recently arcICE researchers visited Iowa State University to perform joint icing tunnel experiments. This joint research activity is performed as part of CoARICE project funded by the Norwegian Research Council.

As part of nICE project activities, aresearch seminar is organized at UiT campus Tromsø on 29th September 2023. arcICE PhD and Post doctoral researchers working on icing  participated in this seminar. Professor Muhammad Virk and Professor Yngve Birkelund jointly hosted this research seminar.  

Research theme of this seminar was ‘Icing & Cold Climate’, that provided a good platform to all PhD and Post-doctoral researchers from UiT working on topics related to icing to disseminate their research work, discuss together and strengthen the synergies with other researchers working on icing related topics. Researcher from MET Norway (Tromsø) also prticipated in this seminar. 

In August 2023,  Professor Muhammad Virk and Dr. Xingbo Han from arcICE UiT visited the icing research group of China State Key Laboratory of Power Transmission Equipment & System Security & New Technology at Chonging University (CQU). This research visit was a part of an ogoing research project (CoARICE) with an aim to further strenthen the acamdemic research collaboration between UiT- Teh Arctic University of Norway and Chongqing University on topics related to icing on structures. A research seminar was also organzied in this regards, where researchers from China, Norway and USA partiicpated and presented their work about icing on different structures. 

The International Workshop on Atmospheric Icing of Structures (IWAIS) will be organized from June 18-21, 2024 at UiT-The Arctic University of Norway (Narvik campus). Arctic Technology & Icing Research Group (arcICE) will coordinate this event. Norway has a long-standing commitment to IWAIS and is hosting this event after 40 years as previously Norway hosted this in 1984 at Trondheim. This has been one of the most important scientific forum for disseminating research results about atmospheric icing and its effects on structures. A research team led by Dr. Hirotaka Sakaue from Norte Dame University USA visited UiT campus Narvik. They had useful meetings with Professor Muhammad Virk and his research team members (arcICE) with a focus to establish a research collaboration between both research groups on topics related to icing and cold climate. Dr Hirotaka also gave a research talk on topic about,’ Temperature and Phase Measurements using Luminescent Imaging for Icing Studies’. Professor Virk believes that such international research collaborations will help to further strengthen the cold climate and icing related research activities at UiT.

Cryospheric Environment Simulator (CES) Lab of NIED Japan is one of the most advanced research lab for ice and snow research. NIED is Japan National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience. arcICE team of UiT is collaborating on joint research project (CoARICE) with CES. In January 2023, Professor Muhammad Virk visited CES lab in Shinjo, Yamagata and had useful meetings with CES director Dr. Kengi Kosugi to discuss the CoARICE project and upcoming joint experimentation plan. arcICE team of UiT is committed to further strengthen its collaboration with CES team of NIED Japan.

arcICE team members actively participated in Multiphysics 2022 confernce organized at Oslo Met University, Oslo Norway from 15-16 December 2022. Four research papers were presented by the nICE project team.

Arctic Technology & Icing Research Group (arcICE) is happy to announce the hosting of IWAIS 2024 conference in Narvik.

The conference will be held at UiT- Narvik campus. IWAIS is one of the major and most prestigious scientific conference about atmospheric icing on structures and is being organized after every 02 years since 1982. Norway is hosting this prestigious conference after 40 years, as previously Norway hosted this event in 1984 at NTNU campus Trondheim.

The conference is scheduled in June 2024. Further details about this event will be announced soon.

We are happy to announce our research collaboration with Aircraft Icing Physics and Anti-/De-icing Technology Laboratory of Iowa State University, USA. This collaboration is established as part of CoARICE project funded by the Norwegian Research Council. The CoARICE project is managed and coordinated by Professor Muhammad Virk from UiT. This international project involves partner institutes from Norway, Japan, USA, Canada and China.

Arctic Technology & Icing Research Group has established a research collaboration with Anti-icing Material Research Laboratory (AIML) of UQAC, Canada through CoARICE project. This project is funded by Norwegian Research Council. Professor Muhammad Virk visited AIML and had useful meetings with Dr Galereh Momen and her Research team. This research collabiration will be focused on issues related to ice accretion physics and anti-icing surface coatings.

As part of CoARICE project, an online research seminar is being organized on 25th May 2021 by the Arctic Technology & Icing Research Group. This seminar will focus on issues related to atmospheric icing on structures and mainly includes CoARICE project partners from Norway & Russia. Researchers from following three institutes will present their research contributions in this seminar.

• UiT- The Arctic University of Norway.
• NarFU- Northern Arctic Federal University, Russia.
• Kutateladze Institute of Thermo-physics, Siberian Branch of Russian Academy of Science

Arctic Technology & Icing Research Group at IVT faculty recently won a major research grant from Norwegian Research Council under the FRIPRO- Fellesløftet IV program. This research project title is,’ Multi-disciplinary Study of Atmospheric Ice Accretion Physics & Developing Optimal Technological Solutions to Minimize Ice Accretion Effects (nICE)’. This is a 04-years project with total funding of 27 million NOK (approx 2,7 million Euros). The researchers from IVT and NT faculty of UiT will jointly work on this project with the clear objectives, ‘To establish a multidisciplinary network of researchers to jointly address the scientific and technological issues related to atmospheric icing on structures in the high north, to lay down the foundations for developing the future Norwegian icing center of expertise at UiT, to follow up the strategic plan of the UiT and support UN sustainable development goals in the Arctic region’.

Researcher of Arctic Technology & Icing group are delighted to partipate in the Arctic Engineering School organized by Northern Fedral Arctic University of Russia (NarFU). The winter school will held from 30 May-03 June, 2022

Arctic Technology & Icing Research Group of UiT is partner of ICEBOX project. This four years (2018- 2022) project was funded by the Norwegian Research Council & Statnett. The project  completed at end of June 2022. Professor Muhammad Virk & Dr Pavlo Sokolov from UiT along with other members of ICEBOX project participated in the final project meeting hosted by Norconsult & Statnett in Oslo, Norway.

As part of nICE & CoARICE projects, Arctic Technology & Icing Research group (arcICE) at Institute of Industrial Technology is organizing a research seminar on topics related to cold climate and icing related research activities at IVT faculty. The is a hybrid event and participants can join with physical presences and online. The seminar is scheduled on 18th October 2022 at UiT campus Narvik.

 Prof Hu Hui (Martin C. Jischke Professor and Director of Graduate Education, Department of Aerospace Engineering, Iowa State University USA) will be keynote speaker in this seminar.
