Research Interests/Activities in the Winter project:

In collaboration with the Winter project’s study of “Finnmarksløpet and the Iditarod of Alaska: Event Tourism,” we are undertaking a study of “Alaska and the Iditarod,” which will explore the significance of the Iditarod sled-dog race for Alaska from a multidisciplinary perspective.  Key components of our Iditarod study will include analyses of the following:

  • Economic impacts of the Iditarod in Alaska
  • Politics of the Iditarod
  • Alaskan and non-Alaska perceptions of the Iditarod
  • Alaska Natives and the Iditarod
  • Marketing of the Iditarod
  • Education and the Iditarod
  • Volunteers in the Iditarod

Our study will conclude with a multidisciplinary conference to be held in conjuction with the 2015 Iditarod, and In collaboration with the Winter project’s study of “Finnmarksløpet and a book of the conference proceedings.  Throughout our study, we will work with our Norwegian colleagues to develop information which will facilitate comparisons of Alaska and the Iditarod to meet the objectives of the Winter project’s comparative study.
