Research Interests/Activities in the Winter project:

Dr. Heimtun is Associate Professor at UiT The Arctic University of Norway, Department of Tourism and Northern Studies and finished a PhD in Tourism and Gender from University of the West of England in 2007. Her research coheres around the sociology of tourism, gender, power and intersecting social identities, as well as tourism perceptions and representation; her current interests are in the interface between the philosophies of feminist social sciences and the practices of tourism research.

Her activities in the Winter Project include research related to WP1 and WP3. Related to WP1, with master student Hanne Syverstuen, Heimtun will qualitatively study potentials and barriers in international winter tourism markets. They will examine international summer tourists’ motivation for visiting North Norway in the winter season. Related to WP2, with University of Icleand and Metla, she will conduct comparative research on Northern Light tourism in Norway, Finland and Iceland. Here the focus will be on productions, co-productions and representations of this form of tourism in the three countries. This qualitative research will also involve master students.

Heimtun is leader of the Winter project.
