Circadian rythms and health in a Subarctic population

CIRCADIAN RHYTHMS AND HEALTH IN A SUBARCTIC POPULATION
Dysfunction in the regulation of circadian rhythms and sleep may have important effect on an individuals somatic and mental health.
Circadian rhythms are generated by cellular clocks in the brain and syncronised by the daily light/dark cycle and are linked up to an indivuals tendency towards “morningness” or “eveningness”.
In Tromsø we have extreme shifts in the ratio of light to darkness during the course of the year. This may have consequences for regulation of circadian rhythms and health.
In the Tromsø 6 study we will use an international questionnaire to estimate the distribution of circadian rhythms in the population.
We will compare the answers on our questionnaire with other information on the individuals health in order to identify any relationship between circadian rhythm profile and health problems.
A genetic investigation on various clock genes and their relationship to different circadian rhytms profiles will also be undertaken.
We also intend to measure photic response in relation to circadian rhythm profiles for some of the participants.
